 Project 1: Proposal

A proposal to concretize ideas, supported by research, for a final design revolving around a given theme that reflects students’ understanding and interpretation of global issues and design aesthetics.

Requirements - The general theme is “Framing”.

- We need to study a cultural phenomenon or a particular subculture, and “frame” your study within the chosen theme to convey your interpretation/adaptation of the culture without having to alter the actual facts as the same information is used as a base.
- Choose one theme from the provided list; PreservationRevivalSustenanceAssimilationTrends
- Produce some preliminary ideas on how to visually express your interpretation. Each idea is to be supported by a short rationale. Conduct visual research to help expand your idea generation.

First Research:
We pick a Mexican Culture - Day of the dead, specifically the spirit creatures from the event Alebrijes

Fig 1: First research

Feedback: We had a meeting Mr. Charles, he suggested that we make a creature design that is missing in this era. After the feedback, we decided to make a new creature that represents the borderless era.

Project 1:Data Collection

First Online Survey:

We will conduct a data-gathering collection process about the culture with relevance to the theme and your research objectives. Via google form, we conducted the survey. The first survey is about the general public opinion towards the creation of a new hybrid creature or mascot that can represent the borderless culture.
Google Form:

Fig 2: First Survey

Second Survey:

The second survey is about the opinions and thoughts towards the numbers of brainstorm and idea sketches for the creature or mascot design. We split it into two categories Malaysian and Universal

My sketches:

Fig 2: Sketches
Explanation:
  1. Ghostcacaros / Rhincaca Owl

  • Malaysian creature hybrid of a Barred-Eagle Owl with Sumatran rhinoceros horns and long-tailed macaque tail.

  • Owl represents the deep connection with wisdom, good judgment, and knowledge. Barred-Eagle Owl is a species that habitat in southeast Asia can be found in Malaysia

  • Sumatran rhinoceros can be found in Malaysia, the horns of this endangered animal will represent agility, strength, and stability.

  • The tail of the macaque will symbolize the cheekiness of a monkey, able to be creative and fun.

  • This creature will become a supporting companion that will guide people’s knowledge and wisdom so people cant be misled by false information and become a strength, agility for working at home still keeping fun and creative.

Fig 3: Universal Sketches

Universal Explanation:

  1. Pioma

Is a kind but sassy creature, with a hybrid of Llama, Scorpio, with eagle bird and tiger legs, Pioma is ready to guide you in this borderless era.

  • Pioma is mainly a Llama, Llama is a comforting creature that symbolizes hard work and responsibility but did you know that llama blood help humans cure flu and potentially Covid-19? In the journal Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, researchers from the Rosalind Franklin Institute and the University of Oxford reported the discovery of two llama antibodies, also called nanobodies, that could prevent the virus that causes Covid-19 from infecting human cells.

  • The tiger legs in Pioma body are able to run fast and using its eagle wing to fly. The tiger symbolizes willpower, courage, and personal strength. Eagle represents freedom and a Keen-Sight.

  • Lastly, Pioma has a scorpion tail that instead of shooting venom it shoots disinfectant that kills viruses and bacteria. Scorpion also symbolizes defense.

  1. Batto

  • A hybrid between cat and bat. Cat is known universally as a pet companion for many eras, cat is believed to help relieve stress and improve your heart health, fun to play with, and definitely adorable. Some might be blaming bats for this pandemic but bats are amazing creatures. Having the power of echolocation to maneuver in the dark bats represent the perception of things that others cannot see. To the Indian tribes, bats are symbols of diligence; while in the Great Plains, they imparted wisdom on their people. In the southwest and Mexico, they are representative of death and rebirth. Batto represents the healing and cure to the sickness and helps to cope with death and the dark times.
