Final Project
Week 12 (14/11/19)
Before starting this project I need to do research on what is a culture. According to the dictionary culture is the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively and according to Wikipedia Culture is an umbrella term which encompasses the social behavior and norms found in human societies, as well as the knowledge, beliefs, arts, laws, customs, capabilities and habits of the individuals in these groups. Culture is a way of life.

In this final project, we have to create a design that is based on our relationship with the culture. A few weeks ago I went to KL with my mom and my brother and I look around the area, a place that I went to is KLCC, Central Market and Bukit Bintang.

after taking a trip in KL, realize me that Malaysia have so much diversity and culture.
Research
I'm Indonesian and I'm part Javanese and Balinese and both places are really known for their mask dances the most popular one from java is tari panji and from Bali is tari barong so I decided to make my self using that stuff. Panji dance which is one of refined dance in Indonesia. The motions used in this dance are very minimal; there is a great deal of stillness, yet the overall feeling is dynamic. The dance is slow, precise and graceful. Even though this dance is the most difficult dance to perform, visually it is the least exciting for audiences. Panji is a character with the innocence and simplicity of a newborn baby, yet he is also wise, self-controlled and humble.
The mask is also very simple in terms of its ornamentation; it is white and very plain, with no hair or other decorations, slanted eyes, closed lips, straight nose, and calm, downward gaze. Because of the plain design of the mask, mask makers believe it is the most difficult task to make because it must be made perfectly: errors cannot be camouflaged by decoration. The accompanying music Kembang Sungsang is long and difficult to play

I also did research on the places I visit, like the Petronas Twin Tower
Petronas Twin Towers were once the tallest buildings in the world. Now the world’s tallest twin structures, the 88-story buildings were designed by Cesar Pelli & Associates with both towers joined at the 41st and 42nd floors (175m above street level) by a 58 meter-long, double-decker Sky Bridge.
Standing 452 meters tall, the Petronas Twin Towers retained its world-title claim to fame until 2004 when Taipei's 101 was built, measuring 508 meters tall. Today, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai (opened in 2010) retains the spot as the world’s tallest building. Located in the KL city center, the Petronas Twin Towers’ architecture is Islamic-inspired and the buildings primarily house the corporate headquarters of the Petronas Company and other offices.

Rational:
The reason that I make the masks based on the origin where I'm from is that it is supposed to represent me, Through Mask Dance, people can learn history, current social issues and virtue values (religion, piety, and honesty) in a fun and entertaining way. culture for me is that something that will never leave your side, no matter where you go or when are you now, its important left behind what has given to me, because who am i right know is made from the past and the past laid many aspects of the culture, the language that we speak, the way we speak, the food we ate, the people we met, and the way we see things, it is all part of who I am and i don't want to forget that, the reason why I put the mask in the Petronas twin tower is representing where I am right now, it means that I brings the culture of my orgins with me and the petronas towes has a meaning that now we live in a modern world, modernatation is a great thing it helps the soceity to live a better life, it helps with time, ecomomy and many more, but we begin to neglect what on what bought us here, what cost of people in the past has done so we can be here, in a modern world people seems to forget about their culture and the culture surround them, people are more focus on their persona n the online world but its important to keep what is good from the culture and the traditiont going, because we here right know because if that.
feedback
Ms. Sherry not a big fan of the peace sign I made in the barong, but the people in the class actually find it quite funny.
Project two
Self Portrait
Week 11(7/11/19)
For our project two, we need to make a self-portrait and use the design principles that we have to learn for the past weeks of this semester. I decided to make my self-portrait digitally using photoshop. Before I start doing the project I search a few examples on the internet.

After I look up for some inspiration, I begin to do some sketches in photoshop. While doing my sketches I did some self-discovery, I keep asking me who am I and Why am I here and How do I end up here and working o this project? What culture that has brought me here? First I'm an Indonesian, I born in a city called Surabaya in 2000, all I remember my family moved a lot when throughout my childhood. My dad is a Balinese and my mom is a Javanese, they said that they almost have the opposite of tradition and my siblings and I have quite a few problems with that, but its also quite fun I learn a lot from both sides. When I go to KL with my mom and my brother we went to the Bukit Bintang area, I realize that in a big city everything seems so fast, there are so many things happening at once. there are traffic and really crowded and it's quite stressful and overwhelming.
My connection with culture definitely affects the way I see myself, I like modernization is simplifying our life and we can stop waste our time and focus more on other stuff, but I can't forget the past that has brings me to this, though now it is more modern life was simpler back then, so much simpler and I miss that.
Another factor that really made me the way I right now is definitely a family, I have a big family. This a pictures of me and my siblings wearing Balinese traditional outfit

Then, I need some references for the project so I look up on some of my pictures.
After I got a few ideas and making my composition, I started by making the background, the reason that I put my cats is that I felt somewhat connected to cats, I have 5 at home and i think they are so funny and weird and they have been part of my life.

Rationale:
Growing up, my home is always loud, I have 3 siblings, there is always some sound and some voice, I don't hate it at all, all though I have a lot of fight and argument, there is less time when I felt lonely and being alone, but it's comforting when I come to my room and there's no one there, when I can be alone. That why I drew my self in an empty room said it that I quite enjoy nothingness, by that I meant is there are so many things happening in this world at once and there is always something on my mind and it suffocates me, it's tiring for me just being with me cause I always have a thought that is really unnecessary and Its frustrated me and I don't really have control for my mind and I'm sure that there's goes for a lot of people, sometimes we don't why we do stuff or why we think stuff, some thought maybe so f*cked that we begin to lose trust for ourself its just pop up out of know where and we don't know what to do, that why I enjoy nothingness, I can just do simple unimportant stuff like starring at the cloud moving, and completely focused on the movement and loss the feeling of being present and my mind become completely blank. Though I found really some sort of comfort on nothingness but just sometimes, if I'm alone for sometimes and don't have any communication with anyone I easily lose motivation but at the same time I'm an introverted person and now I miss having my siblings with me. I like bright stuff like neon light or the color pink they are fun and makes life less boring but if I keep looking at them they kinda make me nausea, that why I put my self facing back at the neon lights and from the background its suppose to represent my mind make me a little dim because I'm facing away from the light. The whole ideas of the room are about my thoughts, I don't hate, enjoy a bit of it but I felt trap. I also love cats, they make me happy.
Design principle applied:
- For the background, I do a one-point perspective
- Then I have repetition also for the background with the neon light and I wanted to make a rythym and also a movement
- There is also a line
- asymmetry on my eyes
- magenta monotone
- contrast to my cat

Symbol
According to dictionary symbol is a mark or character used as a conventional representation of an object, function, or process, e.g. the letter or letters standing for a chemical element or a character in musical notation.
According to Wikipedia symbol is mark, sign or word that indicates, signifies, or is understood as representing an idea, object, or relationship. Symbols allow people to go beyond what is known or seen by creating linkages between otherwise very different concepts and experiences. All communication (and data processing) is achieved through the use of symbols. Symbols take the form of words, sounds, gestures, ideas or visual images and are used to convey other ideas and beliefs.
The symbol is something that we see multiple times a day, it's a really important thing for our society to be able to communicate through a symbol and its a designer job to create a design of a symbol that can communicate correctly and makes sure that our symbol not mislead

Image
An image (from Latin: imago) is an artifact that depicts visual perception, such as a photograph or other two-dimensional picture, that resembles a subject—usually, a physical object—and thus provides a depiction of it. In the context of signal processing, an image is a distributed amplitude of color(s)-According to Wikipedia there could be still images and a moving images

Other than movement they can also image that depended on their color like monotone and grayscale

Then I edited it using photoshop and go to filter then added a camera raw adjustment to it in the first one I want to make the picture color a blue monochromatic image.
Then for the second picture I want the magenta color of the flower, and make it slightly desaturate but still have a tint there and I want the other skeem to greyscale but with the original picture undertone

Week 8
Lecture & Research
For this week lecture was about rhythm, movement, and harmony
![PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN PART 2: RHYTHM](https://www.hatchdesign.ca/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/kelowna-hatch-interior-design-retail-space-kjellgren_kaminsky_mirage.jpg) |
KJELLGREN KAMINSKY ARCHITECTURE CREATED RHYTHM IN THIS DANCE HALL BY REPEATING A PATTERN OF MIRRORS |
Rhythm can be thought of as a pattern in movement. Rhythm can be seen and heard throughout nature and in our built environment through repetition, alternation, and progression. According to what I research there are three methods of achieving rhythm.
REPETITION
Repetition is the simplest way to attain rhythm and can be achieved by repeating any of the elements of design (line, color, texture and pattern, light, and scale and proportion) or other design concepts in an organized and regular way.
![by-Baynes-and-Co-Designers principles of design rhythm](https://www.hatchdesign.ca/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/by-Baynes-and-Co-Designers.jpg) |
Fig 8.3 |
ALTERNATION
Alternation is used to create rhythm by alternating two or more elements in a regular pattern. The pattern may be ABCABC or ABBABB, but always repeating in the same order.
![Alternation_Soma-Architects principle of interior design rhythm](https://www.hatchdesign.ca/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Alternation_Soma-Architects.jpg) |
Fig 8.3 |
PROGRESSION
Rhythm can also be achieved through progression. Examples are a gradation of color or a series of objects that start small and become large in a very regular manner.
![Progression_Barajas-Airport_by-Richard-Rogers-and-Estudio-Lamela principles of interior design rhythm](https://www.hatchdesign.ca/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Progression_Barajas-Airport_by-Richard-Rogers-and-Estudio-Lamela.jpg) |
Fig 8.4 |
Movement is the path the viewer’s eye takes through the work of art, often to focal
areas. Such movement can be directed along lines, edges, shapes, and colors within the
work of art.
We can create movement using line, by creating a path, we can see where the line begins and where it would end, and where the line is pointing in one direction or spiral We can think of lines as being either static or dynamic. Straight lines that are vertical and horizontal feel solid and stable. The way want to create movement with a line is by using dynamic line, Dynamic lines do a much better job at implying movement. Dynamic lines are often diagonal to the edges of the picture plane and may zig-zag or become sweeping

If something or the figure move really fast it will make a blur which our eyes will see it as a movement, in photograph its usually called motion blur

Created by using movement through repetition of geometrical shape and contrast, the Optical movement makes use of the brain’s natural efforts to organize complex visual sensory information. We can think of this approach as overloading the sense of sight. Creating the sensory experience of movement in a still image is engaging and exciting to the viewer.

Fig 8.7 |
Harmony is the principle of art that creates cohesiveness by stressing the similarities of separate but related parts. It has to be noted that it is not the same as unity, but (look slide) Harmony does, however, enhance unity in a work of art. You can create harmony using many other principles such as color, line, shape, form, value, space, texture) as they will be a vehicle to create a sense of togetherness amongst otherwise separate parts.
A set of colors that relate according to a specific scheme creates harmony. It also can use similar in shape and contour. For example, a composition that utilizes only curvy shapes will have more harmony than a similar composition that includes both curvy and geometric shapes.
another way to make harmony is to make a uniform texture, u can also create brush strokes across the surface of a canvas creates harmony.
Exercise 8
For this week exercise, the materials that we must use is collage material and magazine,

Lecture & Research 7
Dot – is the smallest element of graphic design. Depending on distance points of various sizes can be perceived. Designing with dots or points can create a wide variety of visual effects.
Line – the arrangement of dots with a constant distance between them. “Every linear expression derives from a point set in motion” – Andrian Frutiger. The line is much more dynamic in character than a dot. The simplest form of a line is a straight line (—————–).
![](https://cios233.community.uaf.edu/files/2011/09/lines.jpg)
The scale is the size of something compared to the world in general - an artwork might be termed miniature, small scale, full scale or life-size, large scale or larger than life, or monumental.
Exercise 7
For this week's exercise, the materials that we have to work on are a pencil, marker, paint, cut paper. I did a few research on the design, I saw a really good line art of a mountain
When I wanted to do a mountain, Ms. Sherry said the reference picture I use is ugly so she tells me to change it, so I wanted to try a different thing.
After looking through my photos on my phone I saw a sunflower picture then I wanted to try a scale so I wanted to make a scale of a girl using a giant sunflower as an umbrella and also I wanted to make rain using a line.
After the class almost ended Ms. Sherry put us into a group, then we did the same thing as last week but this time we have to pick one of our team's work and presented it.
After the class over i redo the work i did in class and also make a few more line sketches
then i color it with watercolor.
Lecture 6
Today's lecture is about alignment, direction & perspective.
Alignment is the placement of visual elements so they line up in composition. In design, we use alignment to organize elements, to group elements, to create balance, to create structure, to create connections between elements, to create a sharp and clear outcome.
Edge alignment is either to the left, right, top or bottom.
Center Alignment
Center alignment as it states is aligned to a centerline down the middle or across the horizontal.
Alignment is often an invisible line visual elements are aligned to but can also be hinted at physically. Alignment can be used to achieve a particular look and feel. One should always be conscious when working with alignment to achieve the intended result.
Direction serves a similar function to visual weight in that it’s trying to get you to notice certain parts of the composition. Whereas visual weight is shouting “Look at me!,” visual direction is saying “Look over there!”
As with visual weight, you can modify the characteristics of an element to suggest different directions, although fewer characteristics are at your disposal than with weight
Perspective is a technique for depicting three-dimensional volumes and spatial relationships in two dimensions, as if from the viewpoint of an observer. The main characteristic of perspective is that objects appear smaller the further they are from the observer.
Linear Perspective Drawing AttributesHorizon LineA thin line where the Earth and the sky appear to meet each other is the horizon line, and it is always at the eye level.
Vanishing Point (VP)
a VP is a point where all the parallel lines seem to meet and gradually disappear. For example, parallel lines of a railway track seem to meet at a distant point.
There are several different types of perspective depending on the number of vanishing points:
One-point perspective: The object’s 'front' faces the observer and there is only one vanishing point on the horizon line (also called the ‘center of vision’).
- Two-point perspective: There are two vanishing points on the horizon, allowing two external faces of cubic forms to drawn.
- Three-point perspective: Where forms are inclined away from the normal vertical picture plane, as well as receding into the horizon. This requires a third vanishing point and is often used to depict buildings from above (bird’s eye view) or below (worm’s eye view).
Exercise 6
For this week's exercise, we have to make either an alignment, direction & perspective design on a white paper with recycled material. The recycled material that I bring to class today is a cereal box, plastic water bottle, and a card box. After listening to the lecture that is given by our classmate, for the first trial of this week's exercise I chose to make something with perspective.
So I started this exercise by sketching on the white paper, I pick two vanishing points and the horizon live almost in the middle of the page, then I started with playing around with the shape of the building. After finish my sketch then I begin to make the building by cutting the shape with the cereal box, after cutting my shape I use glue to stick it on the paper.
After the class almost ended Ms. Sherry put us into a group to showcase our work, then she instructed us to ask for an opinion as well as to criticize their work so in their opinion we can improve our work
Lecture 5
(26/09/19)
Today's lecture was about patterns, repetition, texture, and surface.
The lecture was presented by our classmate
The pattern is a repeated decorative design, but before we do patterns we have to make a motif, a motif is a shape that we want it to make a pattern.
There are two types of patterns natural patterns and man-made patterns.
Repetition is repeating a single element several times in a design.
Repetition can be radical or gradations.
Texture refers to the quality of the surface in the work of art
The surface is everything that we can touch and feel,
Exercise 5
For this exercise, we have to make either one of those using vegetable or recycled materials, we did this exercise in class

Feedback 5
Someone said my art is nice, but it would be nicer if I make the pattern of the dots be blue-yellow-blue-yellow instead of blue-blue and yellow-yellow
Lecture 4
The lecture is canceled due to bad haze
Exercise 4
We supposed to do our vegetable print but cause the class is canceled we can’t do it so we just have to bring our materials for next week.
Feedback 4
No feedback was given
Lecture 3
(13/09/19)
Symmetry, Asymmetry, and Balance
the lecture as done by a fellow student
Symmetry is a sense of harmonious and beautiful
proportion and balance.
Asymmetry is the absence of symmetry of any kind. By using asymmetry, we will be able to
draw attention to areas in the design to convey dynamism or movement.
Balance is something we always experience in real life, where both sides are
equally the same.
Exercise 3
For our exercise we have to pick from those three, using a medium of either pastel or watercolor.
Lecture 2
(5/09/19)
On the second week, we were taught about a gestalt
According to Wikipedia Gestalt psychology or gestaltism is a German term interpreted in psychology as "pattern" or "configuration".
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHAWxf0Q7a4kB5UuX5j9odwk8YPQWfVdg3Tu263U81GnaFT3hbZ4KCJ8MwXQVUaiNnoaPqcc5BxrYxan7rDrHSICQ0RIMEbE-R6LHh4-U4AJX2etn8e3hZjry1EFHNqFPi_Dmtc4_G1r47/s400/Gestalt+example+%25232.JPG) |

Fig 2.2. Examples of gestalt |
According to the research I made, there are 6 gestalt principle
01. Similarity
When objects look similar to one another, viewers will often see the individual elements as part of a pattern or group. This effect can be used to create a single illustration, image or message from a series of separate elements.
02. Continuation.
Continuation is the principle through which the eye is drawn along a path, line or curve, preferring to see a single continuous figure than separate lines.
03. Closure
The closure is a common design technique that uses the human eye's tendency to see closed shapes.
04. Proximity (aka grouping)
Proximity uses the close arrangement of elements to create a group association between those objects. 05. Figure/ground
This principle describes the eye's tendency to see and separate objects from their surrounding background. A classic example uses a vase/candlestick illustration to show two faces peering at each other, but you can also see this effect in a variety of logo designs. It works because human eyes want to see the figure (foreground object) and background (ground) as two different planes of focus.
Exercise 2
The second exercise is we have to make a gestalt design using white paper and black marker,
first, I did a few sketches oh the exercise

When Ms. Sherry see my work, she said I have an interesting job and I must have an interesting story behind my works.
Lecture 1
(29/08/19)
In the first day of this class, Ms. Sherry briefed to us about our module for this semester then, for our first activity she told us to introduce the person next to us, we also need to draw that person's face.
For our lecture of the day the topic was about contrast, according to the dictionary, contrast is the state of being strikingly different from something else in juxtaposition or close association and according to Wikipedia, contrast is the difference in luminance or color that makes an object distinguishable. In visual perception of the real world, contrast is determined by the difference in the color and brightness of the object and other objects within the same field of view.
As a principle of art, contrast refers to the arrangement of opposite elements and effects. For example, light and dark colors, smooth and rough textures, large and small shapes. Contrast can be used to create variety, visual interest, and drama in an artwork. for examples,

After the lecture, Mr. Sherry instructed us for our first assignment to make a contrast using black and white paper. Then Ms. Sherry and Ms. Anis took us to our senior art exhibition.
